WARE RIVER POWER'S HYDRO STATIONS
South Barre
Power house of the former Barre Wool Combing Company. Note the surge tank in the foreground. Luke Wright is giving me the tour. The dam can just be seen in the lower right hand corner.
South Barre Mill Pond Dam. Note the two different styles of spillway sections. During the 1938 flood, the Ware River overtopped the north abutment and the river formed a new channel that bypassed the original spillway. A new spillway was constructed in the gap.
Lucas Wright standing in front of the 150 kilowatt, 150 RPM, 2300 volt General Electric salient pole, synchronous generator. Beneath the floor is a boiler plate, pressure case that houses a 27 inch, James Leffel Company, Type "F", Francis turbine. It operates on 21 feet of net head.
Woodward Governor, Type "HR" governor. This device opens and closes the turbine gates. When the station used to operate as a stand alone generator, the governor maintained the speed of the generator at 150 RPM in order to maintain a 60 hertz frequency. New Barre
New Barre consists of a 90 kilowatt, 450 RPM, 480 volt Allis Chalmers asynchronous generator. Beneath the floor is a boiler plate, pressure case that houses a 18 inch, James Leffel Company, Type "Z", Francis turbine. It operates on 21 feet of net head.
The new generator being lifted into place.
The newly rebuilt Allis Chalmers generator.
